On behalf of the thousands of lives touched by St. John Providence Hospice each year, the community is invited to support the seventh annual St. John Providence Hospice Oktoberfest event on Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Detroit Athletic Club.
Funds raised from the event will support the Hospice’s adult population by focusing on the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient, caregiver, and family and the Walk With ME program. Walk With Me is a pediatric and palliative care program that provides comfort care to children of all ages, including the unborn and young adults. Many patients are uninsured or underinsured and need assistance with the cost of medications and medical supplies—St. John Hospice can help with this. It also provides 13 months of bereavement service, which is not covered by insurances, for patients’ families. Funds raised at Hospice events help provide community education, bereavement/grief support and assist with the cost of the complex equipment needs of our pediatric and adult patients. The St. John Hospice Walk With ME program serves families in five counties in the Detroit metropolitan area. The program walks with families through their whole journey, as the name specifies the mission it promotes. It provides special needs equipment, bereavement support, spiritual care, expert symptom management, home health aide, sibling and community support, as well as certified pediatric palliative care physicians, to name just some of the support programs available. These services are available to all children in southeastern Michigan regardless of ability to pay or hospital affiliation. The Walk With ME program is committed to serving families and their children so they may focus on life, the things they enjoy and the people they love. The Oktoberfest evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail and hor d’oeuvre reception, followed by a strolling buffet, a 50/50 raffle and the highlight of the evening—a silent auction. Patti Koval and Rose Fenster are the co-chairs of this year’s event. Honorary chairs are Tammy and Ray Scodeller and Mary and Ralph Wilson. The success of the event is made possible through the generosity of many friends and business leaders who have provided support through sponsorships, ticket purchases and in-kind donations For questions regarding Oktoberfest or if you wish to donate silent auction items or a monetary gift, please contact Lorraine Owczarek at 313.343.7582. # # # St. John Providence Hospice is a member of St. John Providence Health System, the largest provider of inpatient care in southeast Michigan and one of the largest employers in metro Detroit. If you let the stress of caregiving progress to burnout, it can damage both your physical and mental health. So if you’re caring for a family member, it’s essential that you get the support you need. The good news is that you’re not alone. Help for caregivers is available. A caregiver support group is one way to share your troubles and seek out people who are going through the same experiences that you are living each day. In most support groups, you'll talk about your problems and listen to others talk; you'll not only get help, but you'll be able to help others, too. Most important, you'll find out that you're not alone. Please come receive some HUGS (Help Us Give Support … Help Us Gain Support) from the team at Providence Park Hosptial. Pumping Up the HeartbeatHip-hop turned healthy best describes the innovative approach Healthy Start Publishing is taking to educate children about health and safety. The company uses reading, music and rhythm to persuade young children to keep their bodies fit. “Pumping Up The Heartbeat” is an illustrated song about the heart and circulation of the blood that kids can follow. Upon hearing it they instinctively begin to sing and dance. As a result they are able to exercise while learning basic anatomy and physiology of the heart. The end of the book includes a summary of the cardiovascular system, questions and answers and a short glossary for parents that may want to provide more detailed information as their children’s interest in heart health peaks. A Heart Smart certificate of achievement, signed by the author, is included for children to encourage their participation. For ordering information, call 1-866-501-DOCS.
